Ahh... am I missing something? What is sugru?

You swept us off our feet

Hello Everyone.
Big Big WOW ! You swept us off our feet yesterday, we are bowled over. We sold out of our first 1000 packs of sugru (what we expected to try to sell in a month) in 6 hours. We were blogged on some of our favourite blogs including BoingBoing,Wired and Core77. We can hardly believe it!! Today we are busy packing your orders and will start shipping them tomorrow. We’re also working hard for the private launch party tonight (which is now a little late for itself!). AND we have also started production of the next 1000 packs of sugru – we’ll keep you posted on that ! Big Big thanks everyone for the most awesome days of our lives !!!

I will be buying some soon! This stuff looks great!

Kyle Haley on December 2, 2009 at 4:25 am

Can’t wait for the restock… I have a BUNCH of ideas sugru could enable!

K Benton on December 2, 2009 at 6:03 am

I do hope that you’re looking into the waterborne market with this product—anything that can make a boat (even a small kayak, canoe or boardsailer) not leak, not rattle, not come apart or work better represents an enormous market.

Scott on December 2, 2009 at 6:38 am

I think you are underestimating the interest in this. You need 10,000 packs, not 1,000 packs.

Think of it this way: If you planned 1,000 to last a month and it lasted 6 hours, you need 60 TIMES more than you expected. You need 60,000 packs to last a month!

You should take pre-orders on the website. At least let us see the pricing.

SimonBarsinister on December 2, 2009 at 11:28 am

Oh, and congratulations!

SimonBarsinister on December 2, 2009 at 11:28 am

Would love to see some info on prolonged skin contact for the cured product. Primarily, in application of prosthetic devices where skin meets the prothesis. This could be a much cheaper solution than those currently available. Could also make a nice set of custom earplugs , providing it is not irritating to the skin.

This is a major innovation! You should have a production line working full time to supply this to the world. Invest some time to get more people to know about this. I am so happy to see young people like you having such innovative and entrepreneurial spirit! That’s really good influence for everyone. Keep it up!

Leo on December 3, 2009 at 3:45 am

@tapender kapur good idea. If Sugru takes pre-orders WITH PAYMENT then they will have the capital to expand their production capabilities (eg: hire the kid next door to mix more batches :-) )

SimonBarsinister on December 3, 2009 at 4:34 am

If there is a problem paying for stock to bring in a b ig batch – let’s face it you need 20,000 packets, lots of people like myself would be happy to pre-order, that means prepay, you get our money so can get more stock!

boardtc on December 3, 2009 at 6:33 am

i want to buy some. will u be able to send it to india?

tapender kapur on December 3, 2009 at 8:21 am

Please do let us pre-order! That will give you some idea of how many orders you have to fill, too, and capital to work with.

Personally, I’m looking forward to making ergonomic dishwasher-safe sex toys.

Rose Fox on December 3, 2009 at 8:36 am

Sales 101.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

jeff on December 4, 2009 at 3:13 am

Awesomely simple yet incredibly useful concept. It reminds me of shapelock, but orders of magnitude easier to use. I would definitely preorder a bunch.

Russell on December 4, 2009 at 10:38 am

Also, you could easily sell lots of different colors too.

Russell on December 4, 2009 at 10:40 am

A huge round of applause for developing (what seems to be) a great product, and for selling out the initial batch!

It looks like I’m a couple of hours late to the party, but already have my name on the waiting list for the next 1,000. Too bad it isn’t a 100,000 run, or I’d buy a bunch and distribute them here in the US for ya. (Heck… do you want to set up manufacturing here? Let me know!)

Looking forward to getting my hands on Sugru, and hacking some stuff! I have lots of ideas already!

Christian Jacobsen on December 5, 2009 at 5:06 am

Make more, make lots, and make some colours that won’t be so noticeable too. I want to do repairs on things that are not neon coloured. Black, brown,. and tan would be good.

Justin e on December 5, 2009 at 8:44 am

One of the keys just fell off my keyboard. I need some sugru!

Like really extra useful blutak, and we all know how much we love blutak.

Kate on December 5, 2009 at 10:17 am

This stuff looks amazing! Not to mention the fact that it’s so affordable, anyone can try this stuff out without shelling out big bucks. In fact, I just ordered the max of 5: 3 Big packs, 1 Multi pack, and 1 Massive pack, just so I have enough to spread the word back here in little ol’ Iowa! Congratulations on an amazing first run, and I can’t wait to get my hands on some when the next batch ships!

A question for you folks though: can you paint or color it in some way after it’s cured? I think some decorative paint jobs would be sweet. Also, is there a way to remove it after curing with a solvent or something (just in case a hack goes awry!)? Good luck with your next batch and I’m so glad I got my order in before this second run sells out! :D

Alex on December 7, 2009 at 3:46 am

When you hype a product and and build up to a release date then your 1st day will be busy?? I don’t believe after the hype you built you could not anticipate sales. A week to dispatch a product after a sale is really poor. Not even an email sent? You should stick to inventing and let someone else handle your customer service. I think you could end up with 1000 annoyed customers. Even if your products is fantastic I would not buy direct again.

It seems daft to make such small batches. 1000 is tiny. You could have taken pre-orders or investment and made 10,000. Are deliberately trying to keep demand looking.

You are either really naive and disorganised or trying to create the image of being.

Sharon on December 7, 2009 at 4:06 am

@sharon, why don’t you tell us how efficient everything went on the first day of your first business?

Jane never claimed to be a business expert. She invented a great new product. Why don’t you give her the benefit of the doubt while she organizes and streamlines her new business.

I, for one, applaud her first efforts and wish her the very best as she learns the ropes of running a business which is a very different set of skills than creating art or inventing a product.

SimonBarsinister on December 7, 2009 at 7:10 am

@sharon I agree wholeheartedly with everything you just said. If your first posting was as helpful and encouraging as this one I would have agreed right away.

SimonBarsinister on December 8, 2009 at 4:29 am

A few pair of my boots need’a patching underneath~~~ XD

Dan on December 8, 2009 at 6:39 am

Hello Guys!
And thanks for all the encouragement and also constructive advice on these comments :) We’re working as hard as we can and also have brought in help and experience in each of the areas you mention such as production / planning etc; we will have scaled up before too long, lots of people with great experience are helping us to get there…
Sorry that the delivery times are not quicker; the press really was a big surprise; I just did one interview the week before launch with the daily telegraph and the other sites picked up on that.
And I should say also that we’re really excited to do this scale up in response to our first customers and not behind the scenes somewhere without knowing if anyone would buy it … from the calls for pre-orders on here last week we feel so lucky to have such a great bunch of first customers that are really helping our business to get off the ground, which hopefully will be before too long – thanks again everyone :D
Jane.

Jane on December 8, 2009 at 8:23 am

@SimonBarsinister
Simon I realise my comments seem harsh, but the difference between success and failure can be very small. Jane has indeed come up with a great idea which seems to have allot of potential. She has done amazingly well to get this far. I think she is very skilled. She was also very clever to take on investment and an experienced partner.

I do run a successful company, but don’t claim to be perfect. I learnt from my mistakes. The mistake I made was trying to do everything myself. Because I could not keep up with demand my customers went else where. Before I knew what happened my competition was pushing me out. I could have had 25 to 50% share of the market rather than 1%. If I had not adapted very quickly and got help I would not even have that.

Jane should only be doing PR stuff. Getting as much media attention as possible. Someone else should be handling the distribution. Someone else product development. When I started I had a very small budget and could not scale up fast enough. I eventually hired a small company to do the distribution and customer service. I thought this would mean less profit but actually they do things cheaper and better than I could do myself. They also knew how to handle customer expectations. Best of all I have 100% of my time on product development and my sales are 10 times what I would have achieved on my own.

I don’t mean to be harsh on Jane. I just think she will kick herself if she does not become number one in the market. I will bet you with fairly good odds that the others are working on similar products and will release to market soon fairly soon. She needs to get supply meeting demand and efficient distribution and customer service ASAP.

If it was me I would offer to make 10,000 packs for some other company. Then you are getting the product to the consumer and you get the money upfront. They handle your customers and take the risk?

Sharon on December 8, 2009 at 12:45 pm

@Sharon: I’ve got mine today, currently repairing my laptop and adding a handle to a particularly troublesome plug, will let you know how it turns out tomorrow. Also, I do agree with other things you said but handling explosive demand like this can’t be easy, cut them some slack, they’ve made the mistake and all they can do is learn from it, doesn’t help to point it out over and over ;-)

Lets just hope this stuff works as well as they say. Any word on whether prolonged skin contact with the cured product is harmful?

PS Jane: I’m still interested in distributing this, if you’d like to set something up when you ramp up production please do let me know.

Hello Sharon – Sorry to post this on the blog but I’ve tried emailing you and it bounced, if you can email me with your paypal confirmation / transaction ID we will see what we can do as your comment email is not in our paypal system. Many thanks, Jane.

Jane on December 9, 2009 at 9:52 am

I am still surprised that more than a week after orders were taken no one has received. Or is it just me who is waiting? Are you hand writing the addresses:-) ? Maybe I could send my gran down to you? She has Christmass cards dispatch down to a fine art.

Sharon on December 9, 2009 at 12:16 pm

It arrived today, so I can ease up now:-) Hopefully it will fix my pot lids. Although I am a bit worried about the contact with food via the steam. Do you think its ok?

I am glad I stirred a little discussion. I think they are doing a great job. I was doing what seems all too fashionable. That’s the problems with blogs, any idiot can claim to know how to do it better publicly.

I wish them tons of luck. I hope all goes well.

Sharon on December 10, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Love to make beats then you should take a look at sonicpro. It works so well, i love all the beats i make.

irrimibaniory on December 12, 2009 at 10:52 am

Well it works! The stuff hasn’t come off the bottom of my netbook and believe me it gets used and abused a lot. Handy on the plug too. One thing I will say is that I forgot to clean the bottom of the laptop first so one of the bits did come off at first but I cleaned it and replaced the blob and it’s stuck like glue. Maybe you could distribute Sugru packs with an alcohol wipe, sort of like a mini hack kit.

Gavri on August 14, 2010 at 11:40 am

Hello there. Have you thought about selling this stuff in Australia?
Cheers. Mark

MARK HEAD on October 17, 2010 at 8:57 am

@mark, yes! we are focusing on working with retailers here in the UK and Ireland right now but will be looking closely at international distribution in the new year. If you’d like to suggest some stores you think would be good for sugru in your local area that would be great !
