Repair and modify a microscope

I'm a microscope service and repair technician and I use Sugru to fix microscopes where the parts are no longer available.

The first three will be going over to Papua New Guinea to help researchers and health workers investigate treatments into neglected tropical diseases.

Over the year I have used several techniques for converting microscopes but have found that the easiest way was to use fairly low power head torches, remove all the straps, holders etc. and just keep the light and the battery pack. As well as converting microscopes to LED, I also converted some to be battery operated so that they can be used in remote areas where electricity supply is unreliable. They can be recharged from a car battery or from solar chargers.

I attached the LEDs inside or on the back of the microscopes with Sugru where the original bulb went. Using Sugru was great as it held the lamp in position but I had a time window in which to reassemble the microscope and adjust and align the bulb into the best position before the sugru set. I also used sugru to attach the battery packs to the microscope with magnets so they can be removed to change the batteries.
