This hack has been evolving for a few years - it started as just a few strips on bare metal (I really like the combination of sugru and shiny silver metal). As we got new sugru colours in our experiments, I kept adding any spare bits to my bike bars. They're even more crazy than this now and I've started texturing the strips as well.
