Following years of hard work by the scientists at Sugru, the new and improved formula is finally here. Hoorah! We took 20 minutes to chat to two of our most senior bods from the lab, Vivian Christogianni and Tom Dowden, firstly to thank them and then to grill them on some of the specifics. 

Here are 5 things we learnt about the new Sugru.

Vivian: For the new Sugru, we’ve taken the best bits from both of our old formulas (Original and Family-Safe). 

It’s still the same award winning material with all the incredible benefits and features, only much more versatile and friendlier to use with a much longer shelf life.

Tom: Yes that’s right, we've managed to formulate Sugru so people have a lot longer to use the packs that they buy and can get up to triple the lifetime if you pop unopened packs of Sugru in the fridge.

Vivian: Comparatively speaking the new Sugru formula is twice as strong as the old Original Formula if left a full 48 hours to set. It’s also kinder to skin than both old formulas and can be used by children as young as three years old.

Tom: The new Sugru formula is quicker to set (cure to silicone rubber) than the old Family-Safe Formula with any application around 1.5mm being able to cure in 12 hours which is a great improvement.  

As with our old formulas, thicker applications may take longer and for load bearing projects. And where Sugru’s exposure to air is extremely limited eg, squashed between two surfaces, then allow 48 hours to set.

Vivian: The official name is Sugru Mouldable Glue by tesa -  tesa of course being one of the world’s leading manufacturers of adhesives and pressure-sensitive tapes. We joined that bigger fixing family back in 2018 and have worked closely with their product development team ever since.

So after all the lab work, how does the new Sugru fare in the real world? We asked Tom and Vivian to share their latest Sugru projects using the new formula with us. 

Vivan: I recently used the new Sugru to attach a metal wall organiser to my wall. It saved me from having to drill into the wall and is holding everything beautifully. Perfect for keeping things in place whilst working from home!

Tom: My kids (11 and 9) made these ceramic turtles. Unfortunately one of the shells fell off whilst firing so I used some of the new Sugru to put things back together. I also used some for the feet to make them grippy, non-scratch and also non-wobble :)
