16 clever Sugru tweaks to tidy up messy sink areas

As you're starting to plan your big clear out this spring, spare a thought for your sinks! Bathroom and kitchen sink areas can be some of the hardest places to keep tidy.

We use them every single day, from brushing our teeth to doing the dishes, but we don't really pay them much attention. Sugru lets you experiment and adapt the layout of your space at home, so it suits you better. And sinks are a great place to start.

Here are 16 DIY Sugru projects to make the most of your space.

Make the most of the space around your sink

1. Create toothbrush holders anywhere you want it

Could this be the best place to store your toothbrush? It certainly puts a smile on our face. Why can't all practical solutions be this cute?!

Most of us just use an old glass or cup to store our toothbrushes, it's the obvious solution, right? Hmmm... we didn't really want to bring this up, but have you looked inside the bottom of yours recently? (We wouldn't advise it!) This project lets you lose the grubby glass, free up some space and replace it with a row of smiley faces for everyone's toothbrushes.

2. Make DIY bathroom shelves for your toiletries

Marloe's bathroom is small and he has very limited space around the sink — not even enough space for the soap!

But that's no problem for someone like Marloe, he loves to do things his way. He spotted the potential to make some room and used Sugru to attach two soap trays to wall brackets, creating loads more space out of nowhere!

DIY in the bathroom can seem intimidating and attaching fittings where you want them is either permanent or simply impossible (and a big no-no if you're renting.) With Sugru you're free to experiment with the layout of your bathroom without the need for any drilling! Plus Sugru is removable so you can take it off if you change your mind :)

3. Maximise the space around a compact sink

Chin had no where to store her hand soap around the sink. As a solution, she moulded some Sugru to act as a little stand in the corner of her basin. Not only is it a clever solution but it almost looks like part of the sink itself!

4. Make a hook for your razor

Toothbrushes aren't the only thing you'd prefer to store away from the sink. We've seen a lot of Sugru-ers making wall mounts for their razors, just like Budd and Annette. By moulding a mount on the wall around the shape of your razor you can give it a home and keep it out of harms way :)

5. Make a soap dish out almost anything

Paula was using one of those suction cups to hold her soap dish and it was driving her mad, always falling off or slipping.

So she used her Sugru + magnets kit to turn this beautiful Paua shell into a soap dish that she can snap on and off when needed!

6. Repurpose a spare part of a bathroom set into a towel hook!

Another clever bathroom hack from Chin. Her bathroom set was missing an essential piece — bathrobe hooks. As her shower room already had a separate heated towel rack, she used Sugru to combine 2 spare parts from the set, attach it to the wall and finished it off with a grippy Sugru ball on top.

7. Make a hook for a towel using Sugru

Dominik was looking for a simple hook to hang his towel, but didn't want to have to drill into his lovely new tiles. So he moulded one using Sugru, right where he wanted it. Here's a how to guide to show you how to make one yourself.

Adapt and improve your sink

8. Colour code your taps

The taps in Anna's bathroom were kind of annoying because there were no clear markings and her kids kept forgetting which was which!

To solve the problem, she used her red and blue Sugru to adapt them. "Our boring taps now look and feel lovely!" (And no one has used warm water to brush their teeth since, bleurgh!)

9. Make your dish brush easier to store

James saw an expensive dish brush that had this smart design feature that lets you store it easily. Instead of being tempted to buy it, he just borrowed the idea and used his Sugru to adapt the scrubber he already had.

10. Improve a sink dish rack with Sugru bumpers

Jordan's dish rack had started getting rusty around the two nylon tubes that used to grip the sink. He was tempted to chuck it out and buy a new one, but realised Sugru could help. He removed the nylon tubes and moulded new grippy feet using his Sugru. Problem solved in 10 mins!

11. Make a DIY magnetic cutlery holder

David has a tiny little kitchen, so he's always looking for ways to save some more space. Here he used his Sugru + magnet kit to make a removable mount for his cutlery drainer, leaving some more space for the washing up.

"I get a kick out of using this every day. There is something so satisfying about coming up with a solution, even my dad was impressed!"

12. Mount a soap dispenser

We'll just let Radu take this one, his email to us absolutely nailed it:

"Keeping the dish washing detergent bottle near the sink meant that we were always wiping it down. A liquid dispenser was what we need but... wait... three screws for hanging the holder?! Three additional nasty holes to drill into the wall? No way, as long as I have my Sugru."

Stop the leaks!

13. Modify a drainer to avoid flooding your worktop

When Josh moved into his new flat, he came across a slight problem. His kitchen sink is rather fancy, which isn't all that convenient - it's round and has no drainer. All the drainer trays he found in stores were designed for rectangular sinks, so the spouts were too wide.

However, with the help of Sugru, he hacked one better!

14. Avoid flooding the kitchen floor!

The worktop around Kent's sink slants slightly, so every time he does the dishes water tends to pool in the corner and drip down onto the floor. Not what you want in the kitchen!

Using Sugru he moulded this little drip stopper that keeps the water from reaching the floor, avoiding any nasty little accidents! Very smart.

15. Stop water from flowing over your sink

If you have one of those sinks that splits in two, you'll probably find that you often end up with lots of water on the floor too. The water gets caught on the surface between the two and works it's way towards you and then... the floor!

Steff moulded this stopper so the water heads back where it belongs.

16. Seal a roll top bath

This idea is not only handy in the kitchen, but the bathroom too!

Julie is a self confessed "DIY novice", but that wasn't going to stop her sorting out her leaky roll top bath. Baths are meant to be relaxing, (she's got candles and everything), but mopping up the floor afterwards was ruining the whole experience.

So Julie decided to sort it out her way. Using white #Sugru she made small water dams and solved the problem herself. So good it's almost invisible!
