How to customise a Logitech G13 gamepad joystick

The Logitech G13 is an excellent gaming controller with 1 terrible flaw: the thumbstick is *tiny*! How to fix this flaw? A blob of black Sugru to sit atop the thumbstick to make it larger, grippier and much more comfortable to use.

Kit

  • 1/3rd of a single-use foil pack of Sugru (black to match)
  • A gamepad of your choice, in this case a Logitech G13
  • Your thumb

Step 1

Here's the unadulterated G13 along with my thumb for scale.

See? Tiny. And not very comfortable.

Step 2

Ball of Sugru applied to to thumbpad

Take a blob* of black Sugru and pop it onto the top of the thumbstick

*I used about 1/3 of a pack, so around 1.5 grams or so, but it's entirely up to you and your thumb.

Step 3

Sugru moulded to fit thumb

Now place your thumb onto the blob, and give it a squash to make sure its going to bind well to the plastic stick.

Then roll the stick around with your thumb in the way you would when using the gamepad, so that you get a good sized, comfortable shape with an indent customised for your own thumb.

Step 4

Sugru applied and moulded to shape on thumbpad

The final step for me was to take a tiny electronics screwdriver and make a crisscross pattern on the top to add a little extra grip, though you may prefer it smooth - entirely up to you.

All done!
