How to customise Converse with sugru

You folks have been sending us some great images of your jazzed up Converse shoes so we thought we would give it a go and make a guide to help others do it too!

sugru is great for customising your Converses because:

- it bonds to most materials (including rubbers and fabric so you can customise or fix the fabric too!)
- is waterproof so will be fine in the rain and even a washing machine
- is flexible so will bend with your shoes
- can be mixed together to create custom colours

Kit

  • Your Converse shoes
  • sugru (1 minipack will do it but we have colour mixed here so have used 2 minipacks)
  • Scissors
  • Soapy water
  • Tissue/toilet paper

Step 1

White and orange Sugru mixed together

Cut open and knead your sugru.

To mix the colours, just knead the sugru in your fingers until the sugru is fully blended. You might like a marbling effect, if so, stop kneading whenever you like how your sugru looks! :)

TOP TIP: While mixing sugru, it will get quite sticky, don't worry, use dry tissue/toilet paper to clean the sugru from your fingers!

Step 2

Sugru applied over the top of shoes

Once you have the colour mixed, break off about half a mini pack and apply it to the toe of the shoe.

Push the sugru all over the toe cap then gently rub it to get a good surface finish.

Step 3

Sugru moulded to fit on shoe

To get a great smooth and shiny surface finish, gently rub the sugru with your finger.

Remember to do the other shoe!

Leave them to cure overnight.

TIP: Use soapy water when rubbing to get a super smooth finish!

Step 4

Shoes and zipper handle covered in Sugru

It's the next morning and the sugru has cured and is good to go!

You could also try stripey/spotty/marbled toe caps - anything you like!

Have fun!
