How to Repair a USB Charger Cable

Make your cables last longer with this easy-peasy fix.

Step 1 — Open your Sugru

Cut open one single use pack of Sugru. Roll half of it into a sausage shape and press it flat.

Step 2 — Stick it

Wrap the flat sausage around your cable, making sure it's snug with the plastic case of the charger. Repeatedly press it to give it a nice shape.

Step 3 — Shape it

Once you're happy with the shape, rub it gently to make the surface smooth.

Step 4 — It turns into rubber

Actually, now you don't have to do anything at all. Leave the Sugru to cure over night and voila— your cable is as good as new.

Step 5 — Repeat

Now the opportunities are endless: You could go and fix all your friends' cables and they'll be eternally grateful. You can do this project with your new cables to prevent them from splitting in the first case. You can colour code all your cables. And and and... Have fun!

TAKE CARE: Be careful with electricity. To ensure there is no risk of electrocution, stick to low voltage items such as phone and laptop cables (maximum 24V). To avoid heat build-up from short circuits or damaged wires, do not repair cables where the metal is exposed or the cable is already working intermittently. We don't recommend it for DIY electrical work on items with higher voltage.
