How to fix a laminated kitchen benchtop

Our laminated bench top suffered a heat bubble a while ago (poor culinary skills...sigh), and there it sat for a long time just looking icky, drab and sad - not to mention probably very expensive if we got Mr Laminator to patch it.

But... sitting in my fridge was a trial pack of sugru - flown all the way to Australia. It had been nestling there for a couple of weeks waiting for just the right moment -and best of all, it included black and white in the pack!
Hooray - SAVED!

Kit

  • - One mini pack of Sugru containing black and white packs
  • - Alcohol cleaning fluid and paper towel
  • - Knife
  • - Spatula (optional)

Step 1

Bench top with hole

The offending bench top - it needs cutting and cleaning before we can apply our sugru.

Step 2

Knife cutting away laminate on bench top

Using your knife, carefully cut around the bubbled section.

Make sure you cut right to the edge where the adhesion of the laminate is still good.

Step 3

Alcohol soaked tissue cleaning broken area

Using an alcohol based solution, clean around the outside and within the cut away area.

Ensure that this has dried before moving onto the next step.

Step 4

White and black Sugru being held

Cut open your two packs of Sugru - one black, one white.

I needed a mottled, grey effect so I used one pack of white and about 25% of the black.

Step 5

Black and white Sugru mixed together being held

Make sure that your hands are clean first.

Begin to mash and mush the two colours together - do it slowly and carefully.

Keep an eye on the need to colour match with the bench top.

Step 6

Sugru being moulded into broken area

While the colours are still swirly and mottled, begin to press the Sugru down into the cut away section.

Use your fingers to press it flat.

As an option, use a spatula to wipe it level - I didn't do this in this instance as it would have produced a different surface pattern than than the bench top and not match up as well. I just used my fingers.

Once satisfied, wipe away any excess from the outside edges.

Step 7

Broken area sealed over with Sugru

Done!

An almost invisible bench top mend - ready for more culinary thrills and spills!
