How to heatproof a teapot base

Make a teapot base heatproof by using a 5g pack of sugru. sugru is great for this project as it adheres very well to metal and enamel. As a type of silicone, it's a good heat insulator so will stop your teapot marking your surfaces. It's even waterproof and dishwasher proof too.

Kit

  • Teapot
  • 1 minipack of sugru
  • Soapy water
  • Scissors

Step 1

Teapot on its side showing base

Make sure the bottom is free from grease, ready to apply sugru.

Step 2

Rolls of Sugru applied to teapot base

Divide a minipack in 3 and roll into small snakes. Apply the snakes to the base and start to shape.

Step 3

Soapy water used to smooth over Sugru with finger

Once you have shaped the sugru around the base, the next thing to do is to make sure it is level. Apply some soapy water to act as a release agent, then turn the teapot upside down to get it level.

Step 4

Teapot with applied Sugru being held

Once you have made sure your sugru is even and level, turn it upside down again and leave to cure overnight. You now have a heatproof teapot that can be placed on surfaces without causing damage.
