How to make checkerboard sugru!
This guide will show you how to make awesome checkerboard sugru! To show you, I've used it for a cool grip for my knife.
sugru is great for this because:
- it's soft touch and grippy
- it's strong and durable
- sticks to almost anything!
Kit
- 2 minipacks of sugru (different colours)
- Scalpel
- Scissors
- Tissue/toilet paper
Step 1
First up, cut open one pack of black sugru and one pack of white sugru.
Knead them in your fingers for around 30 seconds and then stack them on top of each other.
Next cut the sugru right down the middle!
Step 2
Place the halves on top of each other.
Step 3
Carefully and gently cut right down the middle.
Step 4
Stick these two parts together (making sure the pattern continues black - white - black - white, etc)
Step 5
Cut this in half again, this time width ways.
Step 6
Stack them on top of each other.
Step 7
Cut down the middle length ways and stack again.
Step 8
Cut down the middle again (length ways!) and then instead of stacking them, stick them together with the longest edge.
Step 9
Press and pinch the sugru together to make sure all the checkerboard strips get properly stuck together.
Lightly press down to flatten the sugru and make it a little thinner.
Step 10
Now it's time to prepare the thing you want to stick the sugru to. (In this instance it's my knife)
Give it a quick wipe with tissue/toilet paper to make sure it is free of dust and dirt so sugru can get the best possible bond.
Step 11
Wrap the checkerboard sugru around the knife, pressing the ends together to make a smooth finish.
For a super smooth finish, wipe soapy water over the surface with your finger to get rid of any finger prints or unsightly bulges.
You might like to even warp it around for a psychedelic grip!
Now all you've got to do is leave it to cure for 24 hours - rest it on a glass or an empty jar so that the sugru isn't touching another surface.
24 hours later and hey presto! Your funky checkerboard sugru grip is ready for action!
