How to preserve the GSM functionality on a Nokia N900

Nokia N900 has a tendency to to lose all GSM functionality due to a hardware problem on its solder pads. This is unfortunate as the N900 is a truly unique mobile device. There are fixes on the web with glues and metal springs. I found a Sugru solution to be easier.

Kit

  • Torx 6 screwdriver
  • Phillips 0 screwdriver
  • A slot screwdriver or similar
  • 1 pack of Sugru

Step 1

Bare PCB displaced with pack of Sugru

Refer to a N900 disassembly guide to obtain the PCB. You do not have to disassemble the LCD, just remove it. I used the blue 'crowbar' for leverage. The GSM chips are next to the SIM reader, but under an aluminium cover. Removing that cover is tricky. I used a small slot screwdriver to slowly remove the hinges

Step 2

Small dots of Sugru placed on PCB

Apply some Sugru on the chips. I used the plastic tool above to flatten the Sugru, and cut and remove some excess. Put it enough to gain a height of about 1mm over the metal frame, not more. Then wait for 6 hours.

Step 3

PCB with wire attached and balls of Sugru placed at various places

OPTIONAL: N900 is known to have some Micro USB mounting issues. You can reinforce the USB port with the leftover. Insert a cable before you start, otherwise Sugru will leak inside the connector. Also make sure the plastic case of N900 still fits.

Step 4

Cover placed over Sugru with some excess Sugru leaking from holes

This should not happen. If your Sugru leaks from the holes, you closed the cover prematurely. Open the cover, clean it, add a tiny bit, flatten, and wait more.
