How to fix a zipper with Sugru

Fix any zip

If a zip-pull falls out and gets lost, that can ruin the whole item, whether that's a jacket, suitcase or makeup bag. We can't have that!

With just a paperclip, and a small piece of Sugru, you can create a new one that's even better than the original in some cases.

Sugru is a soft-touch mouldable silicone that sticks to most materials.

Here's how you do it

What you'll need:

  • A single-use pack of Sugru
  • A paperclip
  • Time to do this fix: 5 minutes

Step 1

Feed a paperclip through the base of your zip-pull.

Step 2

Open a single-use pack of Sugru. Roll half of the Sugru into a ball, press into a flat disc and wrap around the paperclip.

Step 3

Mould the Sugru around the paperclip into any shape you like.

Pro tip

To give your Sugru an impressive finish, you can use everyday objects to create different textures (toothbrush, scalpel, thimble). You can also embed different materials into the Sugru, e.g. wire mesh. Or simply give it a smooth finish with a bit of soapy water.

Note: If your texturing tool sticks to the Sugru, just dip it into soapy water. Alternatively, use cling film (Saran wrap) or something greasy like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to prevent Sugru from bonding to surfaces you don't want it to.

Step 4

Leave the Sugru to set for 12-24 hours.

Zip it up

Once the Sugru has set, you're good to go!

Sugru is machine washable and temperature resistant in high and low temperatures, so this is a perfect fix for any item with a zip. It will last for years to come.

Even if your zip-pull isn't broken, you could use some Sugru to customise it or to make it bigger and easier to use with gloves on e.g. for ski wear.

Not just practical

Or why not exercise your imagination with a creative fix?
