Fancy stepping up your serving game with an epic upcycling project? A new addition doesn't have to be new new. Why not make great use of old plates, glasses or teacups that you've already got, and build yourself a truly unique DIY cake stand with Sugru Mouldable Glue? A guaranteed showstopper, now you can wow your friends and family with a spot of afternoon tea!

Build a cake stand with Sugru

Step 1 - Gather your stuff
Gather all the items you want to assemble into a cake stand. Here we used a round serving platter and two additional plates in descending size, to sit one on top of the other. We also grabbed two desert bowls, one bigger and one smaller, to place between the plates.
Don't worry if you don't have matching pieces. You'll be surprised at how odd pieces fit really well together!

Step 2 - From the bottom up
- Roll some Sugru into a thin sausage and place around the rim of your bottom dessert bowl
- Press down firmly along the length of the Sugru to ensure a strong bond
- Turn the dessert bowl over and place it, Sugru first, onto the centre of your bottom plate
- Push down on the dessert bowl to allow the Sugru to stick to both surfaces
- Using your index finger, press firmly along the length of the Sugru again to ensure a strong bond, this time to the bottom plate, making sure there are no gaps or shadows, and that the Sugru is flush with both surfaces
Tip: You can rub some soapy water onto the Sugru, to give it a smooth finish.
Step 3 - Attach the second plate

Add 3 blobs of Sugru onto the base of the dessert bowl and shape them into cones.

Place the second plate on top of the Sugru cones on the dessert bowl base, making sure the plate is centred. Then press down to allow the Sugru to stick to both surfaces.
Step 4 - Build up the last tier

Repeat Step 2, this time with your second, smaller dessert bowl, and press down along the length of your Sugru sausage onto the rim of the bowl.

Just as you did with the first dessert bowl, turn it over Sugru first, push down onto the second plate, making sure it's centred, then press down with your index finger along the length of the Sugru to ensure a good bond.
Step 5 - Last plate standing

Here we're repeating Step 3. For our second dessert bowl, there wasn't a flat base, so we applied the 3 blobs of Sugru as wedges on the edge of the second dessert bowl base instead.

Place the third plate on top of the Sugru wedges on the dessert bowl base, making sure the plate is centred. Then press down to allow the Sugru to stick to both surfaces.

Ensure the Sugru is bonded well to all surfaces. Press down and smooth over any gaps or shadows.
Step 6 - Allow the Sugru to set

Allow the Sugru to set for 12-24 hours. Once it has, you'll be the proud owner of a glorious upcycled piece for your home, all ready to wow the crowd with.

An afternoon tea stand or a cupcake stand? You decide. Fill it with all sorts of delights and display with pride!

Please note: Sugru has not been tested for food safety, so please ensure your food does not come into direct contact with the Sugru.
