Safety

Stay safe.

We provide all the relevant safety information for our products in the most useful places – where you will look for it. Mostly you’ll find it on the back of each pack and in accompanying leaflets and booklets. You’ll also find it here on our website: either on general information pages or on individual how-to pages for specific fixes and projects.

The purpose of this page is to compile the most important parts of that safety information for those of you who may have specific concerns and want to find it all in one easy place.

Q: Is Sugru Mouldable Glue skin-safe?

ASugru contains a special combination of ingredients mild enough for even prolonged skin exposure making it great for creative and craft uses and fixes. You can find more information on the SDS (Safety Data Sheet).

Q: Can children use Sugru?

A: Kids love Sugru because it's just like play-dough when it comes out of the pack. We’ve balanced technical performance with chemistry mild enough for little fixers’ and makers’ hands. So, children over the age of three can experience the joys of fixing, making and creating. Sugru is toy-safe but, warning: it is not suitable for children under 36 months due to small parts—choking hazard. And, as it's not food safe yet, it shouldn't be put into the mouth.

Q: Is Sugru food safe?

A: Sugru is not classified as toxic, but it has not been tested for food safety, so it shouldn’t be used in contact with food or drink. Also, please resist the urge to eat it (or feed it to your pets).

Q: I’m allergic to latex – is Sugru latex-free?

A: Sugru doesn’t contain latex, but we can’t guarantee that at some point in the manufacturing process, an operator wearing latex gloves hasn’t handled it.

Q: Is Sugru electrically insulating?

A: Yes, as a silicone, Sugru has high insulation properties. However, we recommend that you be very careful with electricity. Always err on the side of caution and stick to small consumer electronics repairs, low current and below 24 volts.

Q: What are the limits of Sugru for hanging and mounting things on the wall?

A: A 3.5g single-use pack of Sugru can hang up to 2kg/4.4lb. Make sure the surfaces you’re working with are not included on the ‘what does Sugru not stick to?’ list. Always  ensure the surfaces are clean and dry and that your hands are clean and dry too.

In general, there are three things we always recommend in our how-to instructions for hanging and mounting:

  1. It’s always best to maximise the surface area of the contact between the Sugru, the item you’re mounting, and the wall, i.e. it’s best to divide into several small pieces, evenly spaced than depend on only one point of contact.

  2. Take care while mounting heavy things to painted walls, although the Sugru may be strong enough, sometimes the paint may fail.

  3. Use tape to hold the weight of the object you’re mounting for 12–24hrs while the Sugru sets.

Depending on the thickness of the application, for load-bearing projects, allow up to 48 hours for Sugru to fully set.

Q: What does Sugru not stick to?

A: Like most adhesives, Sugru struggles to bond to plastics with certain oily finishes such as polypropylene, polyethylene and Teflon™, some powder-coated metals, and chalky or dusty surfaces. For best results with all other materials, ensure the surfaces are clean and dry.

Q: Is Sugru resistant to solvents and petrochemicals?

A: Sugru, like most silicones, is not highly resistant to oils and petrochemicals, as they tend to allow ingress into the material causing it to swell and become soft and less durable, with the potential for particles or residue to release into the fuel. Sugru may also swell in some solvents and oils, as well as some strong acids and bases. This kind of swelling may affect some of Sugru's properties, such as its strength and adhesion.

Q: Is there anything else I should know to stay safe while using Sugru?

AUse your common sense. Millions of people around the world are using Sugru successfully and safely. As a community, we’ve now fixed more than 20 million things. However, as with any material or adhesive, sometimes people don't use Sugru sensibly. The uses you may see on the Internet are not all recommended as conditions of use and are beyond our control.
