How to attach your bike bell to your brake lever

Whether you've snapped the clip on your bike bell, or you just want to make it easier to use, this is a great way to use Sugru to make your stuff better.

By attaching the bell to the brake lever itself, it's easier to hand, safer to use, and can be placed exactly where you need it.

Kit

  • 1 x bike bell
  • 1 x 5g single-use foil pack
  • Hacksaw

Step 1

Bike bell clip cut with saw

Broken or not, use a hacksaw to cut the clip off the bottom of your bike bell so that you have a clean, flat surface.

Step 2

Bike bell clip separated

Once you've finishing chopping, you'll be left with the clip - don't bin it! You never know what you could make...

Let us know if you have any ideas, or perhaps make a guide?

Step 3

Sugru applied to back of bell

Make sure the new face of the bike bell is clean of any excess plastic, then open up your pack, roll the Sugru into a ball and press it onto the surface.

For this fix we decided to use green Sugru, which we made by mixing blue and yellow Sugru together. Check out this guide for some handy colour mixing tips!

Step 4

Sugru moulded on bell

Apply pressure to the Sugru, making sure that it reaches the edges of the bike bell.

Step 5

Sugru pinched into pyramid shape

Pinch the Sugru into this form, which will help the Sugru bond better.

Step 6

Bell being attached on brake lever

Check the spacing and positioning on the brake lever to make sure it's in the best possible place.

Step 7

Bell being attached on brake

When you're happy with the position, press down on the bike bell firmly to attach it to the brake lever.

Step 8

Bell being pushed onto brake lever

When pressing down, keep an eye on where the Sugru goes. You may find that you have a small screw, which you should avoid covering as it's for adjusting your brake lever position.

You can smooth the surface of the Sugru with your fingers to give you a better shape and finish.

Leave to cure over night, then you're good to go!
