How to make a DIY phone bike mount

In this guide, I will show you how to make a DIY phone mount for your smartphone using only some cardboard, packing tape, and Sugru.

Kit

  • Packing tape
  • Cardboard (from boxes)
  • 2 single-use foil packs of Sugru

Step 1

Cardboard with phone shape outlined

You may choose to cut it out with a different shape if you like, but make sure the entire phone is able to lay on the cutout easily. Once you cut it out, waterproof the entire cutout by 'mummifying' it with packing tape. Wrap packing tape around the cardboard until all of the cardboard is covered.

Step 2

Cardboard phone holder

The second strip of cardboard should be a snug fit to hold the phone in place. You can test this by sliding your phone in and out of the slot.

Note: there is no 'bottom' to this, it is but a 'strip' of cardboard to prevent the phone from flying forward.

Step 3

Labelled areas around cardboard phone cover

Once all of that is done, we will need to seal up any places where the waterproofing may not be good - and this is where Sugru comes in!

Step 4

Phone holder with Sugru applied and labelled black stoppers

The waterproofing step should result in something like what you see above. You'll notice I've added two black Sugru stoppers, molded into a flat shape. This is to prevent the phone from slipping out via the left and right. Once you added the waterproofing Sugru (white), you can mount the phone mount on the bike. See below for a suggested mount position.

Step 5

Areas on phone cover for Sugru application

I've indicated here how the Sugru balls are used for mounting.

Step 6

Phone being had in place by mount on bike

This is my phone on the mount. It is held on the mount securely by a pair of hair ties.
