We caught up with Olivia Wahrbichler from the STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME! team, working out of Hamburg, Germany, to learn a bit about the brand, its products and their incredible worldwide water initiative GOODWATER PROJECTS.
You describe STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME! as "Refillable natural cosmetics with a clear philosophy". Can you tell us about this?
"The philosophy behind our natural cosmetics is to empower people to stop, think and change their behaviour towards water – right where they use it. Water is one of our most important resources and yet it gets wasted, polluted and unfairly distributed. We started the brand back in 2011 when there was little focus on water protection and all-natural cosmetics, so we figured that our name STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME! was the best way to keep reminding consumers how they can help."
That’s a great reminder for consumers but how about bigger companies?
"Great question. A friendly reminder for consumers to do the right thing is only one part of the solution. Companies must try to look at producing products that are 100% natural and biodegradable to benefit us as humans as well as our water cycle. For example, liquid cosmetics contain on average up to 80% water as an ingredient. It’s simply unsustainable. Our Waterless line is made completely without water, creating more space for high-quality, 100% biodegradable ingredients. They greatly help to reduce waste and we currently produce CO2 neutral bars - which is very important for our water cycle."
So how do waterless beauty products work?
"We believe they work better than traditional water products. Back in 2018, we launched our Waterless range and were determined to prove that it’s totally possible to create high-performance beauty products that are made without water and instead allow more space for natural essences and oils. Within a few short months, our vegan and handmade bars became our best-selling products."
Who loves these products and why?
"Our community includes lots of people who want to use 100% natural ingredients because they know it's good for them as well as the environment. They’re well informed and understand that using bar products helps reduce waste and CO2 emissions. Today our Waterless Shampoo Bar is incredibly popular, largely because consumers are starting to understand that their daily actions do matter.
It’s also vital that we’re producing quality products that work, just as well if not better than what people have used previously. We wanted our solid shampoo to be able to compete with liquid shampoos to make them unnecessary. Which means that everything has to be beyond excellent - from the formulation to its performance."
When you talk about donating water, how is this done?
"According to the UN, today 1 in 3 people lack access to safe drinking water. And by 2025, more than half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas. At the same time, according to NABU, anywhere from 8 to 12 million tons of waste are dumped in our oceans every year and pose a threat to nature and people.
It’s easy to feel depressed by these numbers but by working on various water initiatives in cooperation with international NGOs and partners, we have managed to donate more than 22 million litres to those that need it most. There is still much more to do and we try to include our consumers wherever we can. Currently, every product sold contributes to our worldwide GOOD WATER PROJECTS initiative."
Do you feel confident that change is on the way?
"Even just 10 years ago when we started out, it felt like our philosophy was something new and we’ve achieved a lot since then. Thankfully today water and resource protection has become a more conscious part of society and we can see some of the bigger players within the beauty industry following our lead with waterless cosmetics which is very encouraging."
People are doing some inspiring things in the zero-waste community. Who or what inspires your team?
"One of the most inspiring people for us is the Austrian “greenfluencer” DariaDaria. For many years she has shown us how important it is to take action and to become part of the solution now! She is our daily inspiration and like her, we want to call upon and encourage people to consciously change their daily actions regarding one of our most valuable resources - but also in a way that benefits them."
What's next on STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME!'s radar?
"Last year, we launched a number of refillable skincare products, which felt like a dream come true. Our climate-neutral face treatments are now refillable using our recyclable mono-material refills, which are free of synthetics and microplastics and, of course, vegan and biodegradable.
Packaging is a real issue within the beauty industry (the sector produces more than 120 billion units every year), so we’ll continue to expand our refillable range whilst saving, protecting and donating water."
